QASEEDAH BURDA SHAREEF – INTRO & PDF
From the time of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) until today, thousands of Qasidas, Naats, and various literary works have been composed in praise of him, in numerous languages. Even non-Muslims have written in honor of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم). However, among all these compositions, Qasida-e-Burda stands out as exceptional, much like how Surah Ar-Rahman holds a unique and revered position in the Qur’an. Qasida-e-Burda is truly remarkable, and it encapsulates a rich history.
This Qasida was composed by the esteemed Sheikh-ul-Islam, Hazrat Sharafuddin Abu Abdillah Muhammad ibn Sa’eed ibn Hammad al-Busayri (رحمه الله). He was a revered figure among the greatest scholars of his time, highly respected among the spiritual elite. At one point, he suffered from a paralysis, and despite undergoing various treatments, there was no sign of recovery. As his condition worsened and the doctors had given up hope, he turned his heart towards Allah, weeping and making sincere supplications.
In his state of intense supplication, it occurred to him that he should compose a Qasida in praise of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Though he had written other Naats before, this overwhelming inspiration led him to focus on creating a Qasida that would honor the Prophet. Once he completed it, one night, he dreamt of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم). In this dream, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was in a gathering, and Hazrat al-Busayri was presenting his Qasida to him, reciting it with devotion. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) expressed great happiness with the Qasida. When Hazrat al-Busayri recited a particular verse about the Prophet’s healing touch, the dream took an even more profound turn.
In the dream, Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) passed his blessed hand over Hazrat al-Busayri’s entire body and as a token of gratitude and love, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) gave him a Yemeni shawl. Upon waking, Hazrat al-Busayri found himself completely restored, with no trace of the paralysis. He was amazed to find the shawl that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had given him still draped over his body.
It is also mentioned that the name Qasida Burda was given by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the dream.
The news of his miraculous healing spread rapidly, and people began to seek out Hazrat al-Busayri to hear the Qasida. One day in the market place, a pious person approached him asking for permission to relate the Qasida. Imam al-Busayri was surprised, as he had never shared this particular Qasida with anyone before. The pious man explained that he had been present in the dream when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) healed Hazrat al-Busayri and gave him the chador, and that he had heard the Qasida recited directly to the Prophet. So Hazrat al-Busayri gave him a copy of the Qasida.
The Qasida’s fame continued to grow, and people began arriving from far and wide to benefit from the Qasida.
Even the king’s advisor, Sheikh Bahauddin, became aware of it. He came bareheaded and barefooted walking to Hazrat al-Busayri’s house. First he heard the Qasida then he took the pages of the Qasida and placed them on his head out of respect.
Another person by the name Saduddin Faruqi, who had become blind, saw Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in a dream, who instructed him to place the Qasida on his eyes for healing. Upon following this guidance, Saduddin Faruqi’s sight was fully restored.
To this day, countless individuals have benefitted from the blessings of Qasida-e-Burda. Many spiritual teachers recommend it as part of their daily practices, particularly after Tahajjud, to seek blessings, healing, and fulfillment of needs. It is believed to offer protection from harm, help in resolving difficulties, and aid in seeking closeness to Allah. Its recitation is a means of bringing spiritual and material benefits, particularly when recited with sincerity and the intention of seeking Allah’s proximity in both this world and the Hereafter.
